Gorilla Kyogen is a contemporary kyogen started by one of Okura School kyogen actors Senzaburo Shigeyama under guidance of Juichi Yamagiwa, Japan’s preeminent researcher on primates and also the president of Kyoto University. In connection with one of KYOTOGRAPHIE’s 2017 exhibition ‘Family Album’ by Isabel Muñoz. Shigeyama preforms the kyogen in front of Muñoz’s images on the huge installation of 4K monitors. This performance is accompanied by a fascinating talk by Yamagiwa and Shigeyama about gorillas, expression and love.

Juichi Yamagiwa

Doctor of Science, President of Kyoto University. Has conducted field research on gorillas in Africa since 1978. Japan’s preeminent researcher on primates. Yamagiwa’s research focuses on the behavior and social structures of gorillas and chimpanzees, and the implications these have for the origins of human family structures and other social structures. His major writings include Human Evolution: Perspective from Primatology, published by Shokabo Co. in 2008.
