Marc Riboud

「Alaska」 presented by CHANEL NEXUS HALL

Marc Riboud (born 1923, Lyon, France) was an associate of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, and other founding members of the photographers’ cooperative Magnum. A true photographic witness to the 20th century, Riboud was present at many of its defining events, from the African independence movements of the 1950s to the Vietnam War in the 1960s. In 1957 he succeeded in becoming one of the first Western photographers to capture scenes from a young Communist China. In recent years, his reputation has been further enhanced by high-profile retrospective exhibitions at the International Photography Center (ICP) in New York and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.

Following its sojourn at the CHANEL NEXUS HALL in Tokyo’s Ginza district, where it received high acclaim, this standout exhibition presents around 50 previously unshown works taken in Alaska in the 1950’s, during the ‘forgotten age’ lasting for the brief period between the Gold Rush and the discovery of oil. The images cast a sharp but distinctively lyrical eye on scenes of human and animal coexistence with nature and other facets of the artist’s encounter with the region.
