Collotype printing started in France 150 years ago and shares an intimate relationship with early photography and fine art. The process takes time but provides extremely fine tonal gradation and deep texture. This workshop will give you opportunity to visit the Benrido studio and reproduce your image using the collotype techniques.

In this workshop we will deviate from the traditional glass-made printing plate and participants will learn to use the new version of the process plate made from a monochrome negative (collotype tissue). This tissue provides the base where the negative can be coated with the gelatin, infused with DIAZO a nontoxic photosensitizer. Making collotype more accessible. Even those who have experienced traditional collotype workshops will gain knowledge and a new perspective using this version of production.

After an explanation of the method of production, participants produce the collotype tissue, then complete the process: exposure, developing, and printing.

Participants need to submit photographic data by 4/18 (Tuesday) to Benrido,
